"Salvation is from the Jews" 1
So said Jesus. And no wonder. For to the Jews "belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen." 2
One cannot fully understand and appreciate the Christian faith without knowing at least something about its Jewish roots.
We are privileged to have Rev. Steve Schlissel as our speaker for this year’s Trinity Festival to help us grow in our understanding of these things. Steve is the pastor of Messiah’s Covenant Community Church in Brooklyn and overseer of Urban Nations, an outreach ministry to the immigrant population of New York. He is an astute observer and critic of contemporary society, and his teaching is filled with profound insights into the meaning and application of Scripture to all areas of life. He is truly a modern day son of Issachar who understands the times, to know what Israel ought to do.3
Our format will be a bit different this year. All our conference sessions will be held on Saturday, April 17. Block off the entire day! Cancel whatever you've already got planned! We'll have two sessions in the morning and three in the afternoon (with a hamburger feed in between). It will be a long day, but the teaching will more than reward your effort. It will open the Bible to your understanding like never before...guaranteed!
The following day, Steve will speak during Sunday school and deliver the sermon during the morning worship service.
Here is some of what you will learn:
What the Old Testament is all about
What the New Testament is all about
Jews, Gentiles, and the Apostle Paul
What Christians can learn from the Jews
The Jewish People, Past, Present, and Future
"You [Gentiles] were grafted in...and now
share in the nourishing root of the olive tree"
(Rom. 11:17)
More About Steve Schlissel
Steve has served as pastor of Messiah's Covenant Community Church in Brooklyn since 1979. Born and raised in New York City, Steve became a Christian by reading the Bible. When Jesus said that everyone who hears His words will give an account for his response (Matthew 7:24-27), Steve took it seriously and sought the mercy of God through Jesus.
Steve and his wife Jeanne were married in a synagogue in 1974 by a rabbi and a priest. You had to be there: they marched down the aisle to an organ arrangement of Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven." The Schlissels homeschooled their five children (who now range in age from 30 to 19), and also helped raise several foster children (mostly Vietnamese). In 2003, they adopted Anna (who was born in Hong Kong in 1988, but is now a U.S. citizen). They have 8 foster grandchildren and eleven "natural" grandchildren, and likely more on the way!
